Jižní Amerika — Paraguay a povodí dolního toku řeky Paraná, Argentina, Brazílie, Bolívie a Paraguay. Obývá především pomalejší vody a záplavové oblasti.

Potrava
Především vodní bezobratlí a suchozemský hmyz, dále zooplankton a v menší míře rostlinný materiál.
